Danish Bettors Required To Use Player ID Cards When Placing Bets

A plan in Denmark to force sports bettors to identify themselves every time they place a bet in a retail establishment is finally coming together. It has been in the works for almost 10 years, and will go into effect for all bettors at the beginning of next month.

The idea has been tossed around since 2015, and finally found enough support to become a permanent fixture in sports betting in 2021. At the time, the idea was to implement the change in 2022, but red tape and bureaucracy got in the way.

All of the issues and opposition to the system are no longer preventing Denmark from implementing the change. The Ministry of Taxation confirmed the new regime in a press release yesterday, and bettors only have four days to prepare.

All Operators Must Comply

The ID cards, according to the ministry, are operator-specific. Each bettor will need to have one, and his or her player ID number will become a requirement for betting transactions.

In order to set deposit limits and cash out winnings, the player will have to present the card each time. However, it’s up to the operator to determine if it wants to issue a physical card or a digital-only alternative.

The goal behind the initiative, which is supported by the Danish gaming regulator Spillemyndigheden, is to prevent money laundering by disallowing anonymous bets, according to the program’s supporters. At the same time, it could also provide substantial data that might be able to help the authorities track questionable bets and potential match-fixing.

By default, some bettors may immediately find out that they can no longer wager through a land-based sportsbook or kiosk. Anyone who is in the Register of Voluntarily Excluded Players (ROFUS, for its Danish acronym) as of October 1 will automatically be rejected when trying to place a bet.

As cumbersome as it may seem on the surface, there are some benefits to bettors for using an ID card. In the event he or she loses a betting slip, the registered player ID data will be able to verify the bets and the winnings.

How the Card Will Work

Danish bettors will only have to register once with the individual operator to get his or her card. After that, the player will have to use the card every time he or she places a bet in a physical shop.

When the game card is scanned, data is sent to the game provider, who then automatically checks the necessary information and reports back to the shop whether the bet is approved or not. In theory, this means that it will no longer be possible to buy land-based bets anonymously.

This will also make it considerably more difficult for children and minors under the age of 18, the legal betting age, to place wagers. It should also be impossible for self-excluded persons to bet in brick-and-mortar shops. The same applies to players who have exceeded the amount limit they have set themselves.

While the idea first appeared in 2015, it wasn’t until 2019 that it began to gain serious traction and support among various political parties. Then, in 2021, the government began to finalize the plans that have led to the upcoming launch of the card.

What remains to be seen is how effective the system is and how well those in the gaming ecosystem adhere to the requirements.
