Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, construction work on Resorts World Las Vegas continues apace, with the property’s management announcing a new partnership with AEG Presents for a 5,000-capacity theatre in July.
While it’s not set to open until next summer, Resorts World Las Vegas is already rising to meet the new challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Developed by Malaysia-based Genting Group, the 3,500-room, $4.3bn casino resort has introduced new safety protocols, allowing it to keep construction on track for its planned 2021 launch.
“This pandemic is definitely challenging us even though we’re not open,” said Resorts World Las Vegas president Scott Sibella. “We’re hoping to get through this by the time we open and we’re closely watching other properties and making adjustments where we can while we build.”
The veteran executive noted that while the pandemic has not been the ideal time for “big announcements”, the resort has a number of important projects in the pipeline.
“We didn’t want to make announcements when it’s all you’re hearing about in Las Vegas and throughout the country, but we’ve tried to pick and choose good times [because] …we want to give everyone a taste of what’s coming,” he stated.
In mid-July, the resort unveiled a partnership with AEG Presents to develop and operate a 5,000-capacity theatre.
Capable of hosting concerts, residencies, conventions and sporting events, The Theatre at Resorts World Las Vegas will be operated by Concerts West, a division of AEG Presents.
“The residency has gotten stale,” said John Meglen, president and co-CEO of Concerts West. “Artists bring in their touring shows and bands play X number of nights in a smaller theatre – where you can get bottle service as opposed to really getting creative. We want to get back to great shows. We want to create a playground with all the latest bells and whistles, and let artists come in and execute their own unique show and vision.”
Alongside this, back in June, Resorts World submitted plans for a passenger station and tunnel which would connect the property to the Las Vegas Convention Center’s underground transportation system currently under construction by Elon Musk’s the Boring Company.
“The proposed Resorts World Las Vegas passenger station would provide convention guests and visitors with a rapid and seamless experience between the Las Vegas Convention Center and Resorts World Las Vegas,” Sibella explained. “Convention guests would no longer have to worry about long walks or gridlock traffic around the convention center – they could take the transportation system to Resorts World Las Vegas for lunch, meetings, or personal appointments, and be back to their conference or expo in minutes.”
Sibella suggests that Resorts World, along with several other upcoming development projects in Las Vegas, will play a key role in helping the city recover from the impact of coronavirus.
“If you look at what’s happening in our town with the convention center expansion, the Raiders’ stadium of course and then what we’re doing, I think this is the best thing for this city to get through this,” he affirmed. “You [have] these three big things coming up out of the ground and …they’re really going to help us get back faster to where we want to be.”
