The six floating casinos on Goa’s Mandovi river were granted another six-month extension by the state government on 22 April.
The casinos vessels have been forced to operate subject to repeated six-month licence extensions for the past decade.
The previous six-month deferral granting the casinos permission to operate on the Mandovi expired at the end of March, while the new extension will run until 30 September.
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government was previously said in be finalising plans to move the casinos to “a land-based designated entertainment zone”, thought to situated near the new airport in Mopa.
However, following the death of chief minister Manohar Parrikar in March 2019, the government once again raised the possibility of moving the casinos to an alternate mooring.
All of Goa’s casinos – both the six ship-board operations and the handful of land-based venues in upscale hotels – have been closed since mid-March as part of efforts to combat coronavirus.
India’s largest casino operator Delta Corp saw its revenue and profit slide for the three months ending 31 March, the fourth quarter of its fiscal year.
The company, which operates three casino vessels in Goa, reported that revenue was down 10 percent year-on-year to INR1.91bn ($25.3m) during the quarter, while after-tax profits fell 49 percent to INR290.4m.
